weather: first nice high cloud base, then increasingly foggy (and wettish)

  • talked to Florian Zimmer about flight planning
  • flew grid with approximately 30m distance between waypoints (manual flying!) over the ROV no walking area
  • started in toilet corner and flew first leg away along the ship axis and then back one further away from the ship and so on
  • only moved up legs at 2nd waypoint on 2nd leg
  • because of battery then flew vertical profile up to about 30m (check GPS) in the middle of ROV domain
  • drone was pretty wet when landing back at ROV toilet
  • ROV was not in use anymore today

  • put drone back in wet lab and charged batteries

17:30ish

weather: we expected it to clear up, but it stayed at least a bit foggy all afternoon. We kind of caught the best window for drone flying this afternoon

  • whole ship waited for our measurements this afternoon
  • had Amy's 3D camera mounted on drone (→ use this for images of what we measured, because Camera not working, I think)
  • after putting up IR screen we moved with Ruschle as bear guard in group protection to ROV hole
  • Ruschle, Insa, Amy, Florian, Jaggi, me
  • flew same grid as in the morning with more direct light; however not completely blue sky (fog about 160m thick according to Torben's drone flight)
  • flew vertical profile roughly at same location as in the morning
  • be careful with interpreting the data at greater heights in all profiles (we might have measured the albedo of fog)
  • descending profile more or less over radiation buoy or even closer to ship (→ maybe discard)
  • changed batteries and flew another profile for Florian where ROV measured depth profile for transmittance
  • also here be careful with higher altitudes (might have measured fog)
  • afterwards continued with speed-dismantling of turbulence stuff
