Weather: thin fog, thickening during day and clear again after 18:00. a bit windy. frozen SSL that became soft quite quickly in the morning. In the morning, some ponds had a thin frozen layer on top.

Note: measuring snow heights today with ruler and avalanche probe to compare the measurements, still...

9:00-11:15  PS149_32-1-snowpit_064

transect at MainTransect  (Matthias, Ruschle)

100m, SnowImager (SSA) every 5m, in the albedo footprint if possible. If albedo measurement is in the pond, then we measured next to the pond. Measured the snow heights with ruler and with avalanche probe again. Double measurements at 25 m (25 a next ot pond, 25b on the edge of pond). Same for 50m point. Same for the grid measurement for density.

Cool feature at 40m (just a note). Dummy at 60m. 4 sets of reference images at beginning. Measurement of a footprint after 25 m at 850nm.

SI powered off before the reference measurement, but powered on again and then redid the measurement. Should be fine.

Measurements next to pond: 0,5,15,25,35,50,55,60,85m

Photogrammetry 4x at 0m, while waiting for bear guard, then 1x each at 25m, 50m.

13:00-15:00  PS149_32-1-snowpit_065

snowpit at RS site (Matthias, Ruschle). Snowpit starting at maybe slightly thicker, rafted ice that then goes into gray on the transect, also "right" of the snowpit.

Measurements:

  • SnowImager (surface at 3 locations (1 m apart) and interface at 2 location (in the same pit, 0.2m apart)), SSA + density grid.
  • snow height (every 0.3 m along 4.5 m, left and right of actual snowpit) (with ruler, and avalanche probe)
  • Density, Salinity, dO18, BC
  • Temperature
  • Sample for microCT
  • Salinity and dO18 sample of interface
  • Photogrammetry for surface roughness

14:30-16:00  PS149_32-1-snowpit_066

transect at RS site (Matthias, Ruschle)

Snow heights again measured with ruler and avalanche probe.

starting from snowpit:

  • parallel to transect
    • 20 m, every m, SSA starting at 0m, last measurement at 20 m
    • density grid, every +0.5 m, in between SSA measurements
    • Photogrammetry at 5,10,15,20m, (0 already at snowpit)
  • perpendicular to transect
    • 20 m, every m, SSA starting at 0m, last measurement at 20 m
    • snow height possibly not done, because the tape was all over the place because of wind (don't ask me!)
    • Photogrammetry at 5???,10,15,20m (with boot), (0 already at snowpit)

16:30-17:15  PS149_32-1-snowpit_067

transect at ROVTransect  (Matthias, Ruschle)

100m, SnowImager (SSA) every 5m, in the albedo footprint if possible. If albedo measurement is in the pond, then we measured next to the pond. We measured exactly at 19m for the HypeSPectral camera. 40 m was tramples, so we measured at 41m, 59 was pond, 79 was exact, 100 was pond.

Not measured: 10 m (big pond), 55 (big pond), 100 (big pond)

Measurements next to pond: 40,44,50,61,

Measured the snow heights with ruler and with avalanche probe again.

Photogrammetry 100, 73, 50, 25, 0m

13:00-15:00  PS149_32-1-snowpit_068

snowpit at turbulence site (Ruschle). thicker SSL, slightly uneven, probably rafted ice.

  • Salinity and dO18 sample of interface
  • Photogrammetry for surface roughness

14:30-16:00  PS149_32-1-snowpit_069

transect at RS site (David, Ruschle), a bit toward a small-ish ridge. All on relatively thick ice.

Snow heights again measured with ruler and avalanche probe.

starting from snowpit:

  • 20 m, every m, SSA starting at 0m, last measurement at 18 m , then a funky thick candle ice type surface of drained refrozen pond as last measurement.
  • wet slush at 11, 12 m
  • cool ice "vein" at 8 m

Nice sunset for an emotional day.

Funky ice at the end of transect (after 18 m, 069). Candle ice type stuff...

Same ice as in image above. Picture by Ruzica Dadic
