Weather: foggy and moist, windy, new wet snow on the surface

Measurements:

  •  SnowImager (surface at 3 locations, snowpit at 1 location and interface at 3 locatios), for SSA and density (grid) (surface and interface at transect meter 6,7,8, snowpit at transect m 7, where snowpit was taken)
  • snow height (every 0.3 m along 4.5 m, left and right of actual snowpit)
  • Density, Salinity, dO18
  • Temperature 
  • Perfect sample for microCT of snow, SSA + interface (go Matthias!). 
  • Salinity and dO18 sample of interface and ice underneath.
  • surface roughness of surface (interface was probably some slightly rafted ice, not representable by 1x1 m).

25 m, every m: SSA (without density grid) starting at 0m, last measurement at 25 m. Density (with grid), offset 0.5 m to right of SSA, and also offset ~1m above (see picture).

Note: on the left is a picture from the same transect, but looking in the other direction from 27.7.2025, after the surface snow/SSL got a lot wetter/melted. The transition between the blue ice and the SSL (that we measured on floe 1a, PS149_13-1-snowpit_006) was now much better visible under the thiner/grayer snow/SSL.

transect at RS site (Michi, Matthias, Ruschle). Lots of soot flecks on the snow from previous day's ships rubbish burning upwind. We measured around the visible patches. 

15 m parallel to ship, every m: SSA (without density grid) starting at 0m, last measurement at 25 m. Density (with grid), offset 0.5 m to right of SSA. More snow with a wet puddle underneat around m15. 

20 m perpendicular to ship, every m: SSA (without density grid) starting at 0m, last measurement at 15 m. Density (with grid), offset 0.5 m to right of SSA

Thick ice transect one day later (picture is processed to show the contrast), showing a much wetter and more melted surface (the so-called "Matsch" in Swiss German:)). Transition between what was previously blue ice and SSL is now more visible between 4m and 5m on the transect. Picture by Ruzica Dadic
