What we offer our guest scientists on Helgoland

To support our guest scientists at the BAH, we provide lab space with basic equipment such as microscopes, a PC, cooling facilities and running sea water supplies. 

Requirements for more extensive facilities can be discussed with the technical supervisor Uwe Nettelmann (Uwe.Nettelmann@awi.de, +44 04725 8193212) and the guest scientist co-ordinator.

The proximity to the Helgoland rocky intertidal means that guest scientists can easily collect biological material for their studies. In addition, orders can be placed for the scientific dive team to collect further material from the sub littoral. Please place your orders directly with the dive centre (order form). Plankton can also be collected onboard our research vessels Aade and Uthörn. Collected plants and animals can be cultured in flow-through tanks and a constant temperature room can be booked for small experiments.

For planned scientific stays with overnight stays and use of the infrastructure of the location Helgoland we ask for registration. To simplify local procedures, we also ask future Bachelor and Master students to register.

To use the service, a binding registration per person and the arrangement with the host research team on site is essential.

What we offer our guest scientists on Sylt

Two laboratories are available for guest researchers at the AWI Sylt. Both are equipped with microscopes (stereo/binocular), scales, fresh and seawater access, freezers, drying ovens and fume hoods.

In addition to the basic facilities outlined above, visiting scientists that are directly collaborating with an AWI Sylt researcher have access to

• the nutrient analysis

  (e.g. autoanalyser, C/N analyser, muffle furnaces, spectrometers, salinometers)

• micro- and molecular biology laboratories

  (e.g. clean bench, shaking incubator, PCR, real-time PCR, and QIAxcel capillary electrophoresis)

• temperature-constant rooms equipped with CO₂ supply

• outdoor mesocosms comprising of 24 replicate tanks with a volume of 1,800 l to simulate ocean warming and acidification under various tidal conditions
