Both Marine Stations (Helgoland and Sylt) offer excellent working conditions and equipment for individual guest researchers. The Guest science team endeavours to support external scientists and university courses in their work at the Marine Station Helgoland and the Wadden Sea Station List/Sylt. We aim to network our guests with AWI staff at both stations to maximize the benefits derived from their research and to facilitate national and international science and education co-operations.

Gastlabor

What we offer our guest scientists on Helgoland

To support BAH visiting researchers in the implementation of their projects, we provide guest laboratories that can be booked.

The guest laboratories each offer space for two scientists and are equipped with internet connection, seawater connection and basic laboratory equipment such as microscopes and a fridge. The use of extended equipment is possible in consultation with the technical supervisor for guest researchers Uwe Nettelmann (Uwe.Nettelmann@awi.de, Tel: 04725-819 3200) and the guest research coordinator (Anna Bergmann, Tel: 04725-819 3136). You find the list of devices here.

The proximity of the BAH to the Helgoland rocky mudflats allows our visiting researchers to easily collect biological material in the intertidal area. In addition, sublittoral organisms can be obtained through our scientific diving department. Visiting scientists are asked to order material from the diving team by sending this order form to Uwe Nettelmann (uwe.nettelmann@awi.de), as this will facilitate the allocation of organisms. The research vessels 'Uthörn' and 'Aade' can be used for sampling plankton catches and from the sublittoral. The collected organisms can be kept in a flow-through system. In addition, a constant temperature room with a seawater connection is available for experiments or for keeping samples.

To use the service, a binding registration per person and the arrangement with the guest research team on site is essential.

What we offer our guest scientists on Sylt

Two laboratories are available for guest researchers at the AWI Sylt. Both are equipped with microscopes (stereo/binocular), scales, fresh and seawater access, freezers, drying ovens and fume hoods.

In addition to the basic facilities outlined above, visiting scientists that are directly collaborating with an AWI Sylt researcher have access to

  • the nutrient analysis
(e.g. autoanalyser, C/N analyser, muffle furnaces, spectrometers, salinometers)
  • micro- and molecular biology laboratories
(e.g. clean bench, shaking incubator, PCR, real-time PCR, and QIAxcel capillary electrophoresis)
  • temperature-constant rooms equipped with CO2 supply
  • outdoor mesocosms comprising of twelve 1,800 l replicate tanks to simulate ocean warming and acidification under various tidal conditions.

List is the home port of the AWI`s state-of-the-art research vessel MYA II that can be used for short research cruises to take pelagic or benthic samples. The ship is additionally equipped with a wet lab, IT desk for data uploading, Ferrybox, ADCP (acoustic doppler current profile), BIOSONIC (biomass echo sounder), and a multibeam echo sounder. Registrations for short research cruises with RV Mya II via the scientific research vessel coordination: mya.schedule(at)awi.de
