There are 2 zodiacs onboard with aluminum floors and outboard motor and a dinghy made of synthetic material with paddles.
The zodiacs will be operated by crew members. Usage has to be announced to the chief scientist first.
Everybody has to wear a survival suit in the zodiac.
You need to lend a well-fitting suit from the AWI clothing store. Please also order thermo insoles as well and wear warm socks with the suit.
Advantages of the survival suit:
- Cold shock upon the sudden contact with the water is avoided.
- Uncontrolled breathing possibly under water during the first few seconds will not happen
- The danger of heart and circulatory system problems is reduced
- Danger of submersion is reduced.
- Freezing to death is delayed.
Core temperature within the body decreases by 2°C in 6h.

Use of scientific work boats
Scientific work boats (e.g. Zodiacs or RIBs) that are brought on board the RV Polarstern for scientific purposes are only permitted to be operated by participants who hold a valid pleasure craft license (SBF) or a higher qualification. Operation by the ship’s crew is not permitted.
In addition, the chief scientist must carry out a risk assessment and provide operating instructions to "Schifsskoord", in addition to the manufacturer's operating manual.
