Attention:
The Ice radar is a redundant system used for navigational and scientific purposes. Therefore, two independantly operated set ups exist, one referred to as the "scientific ice radar" and the other one called the "ship's ice radar". Operation requires training and the scientific ice radar can only be operated upon request. Please, announce operations of the ice radar to AWI-Logistics prior to the cruise.
Summary
The Furuno ice radar visualizes ice structures, identifies the optimum route through ice, and displays the route even in poor visibility conditions. It enables to differentiate between open water, ice pans, open water leads in ice fields and the ice ridges that impact operations in ice zones. In open water the ice radar detects small bergy bits and growlers that can significantly damage a vessel. The system is equipped with a XN20AF-R 6,5ft. antenna installed Among other applications, the ice radar is used in an automated mode to track sea-ice motion around the vessel. This sea-ice motion information is then used to correct the displacement of incoming satellite scenes.
