Attention:

Please note that operations of the Sound Velocity Probe MIDAS SVP requires experienced scientific staff on board. The system is not operated by the ship's crew. Announce operations with the Sound Velocity Probe MIDAS SVP to AWI-Logistics prior to the cruise and clarify the data transfer after the cruise.

Summary

MIDAS Sound Velocity Probe is used for measuring the speed along a vertical transect through the water column up to 6000m water depth. Two identical Valeport MIDAS probes exist on RV Polarstern, the second probe with serial number SN41492 serving as backup for SN34079.

Components

The sound velocity probe consits of the probe, the mounting cage and the computer. The data processing software DataLog Express is installed on the computer. RS232 interface connects the computer to the probe. The sound velocity profiles can be transferred to the computer of the multibeam echo sounder Hydrosweep DS3 via the computer network.

Two Valeport MIDAS exist on RV Polarstern and are used alongside without further discrimination.

Rawdata storage on board

The sound velocity probe measures the sound velocity in temporally equidistant intervals and stores the data to the internal flash drive. Import of the data from the probe to the computer is conducted with the data processing software DataLog Express. There is no designated central sound velocity data storage location. The operator is in charge of sound velocity data storage for further use, e.g. data transfer to the multibeam echo sounder Hydrosweep DS3.

Data archiving on land

After the cruise, the operator transfers the measurement data along with required meta data to AWI after consultaion with the data scientist and AWI Logistics.
