Jasmin Groß

Oldenburg

Hi everyone, my name is Jasmin, 34 years old, from Germany but have lived overseas for 12 years before starting mypostdoc at the HIFMB in Oldenburg in February 2022. My background is in food web ecology and cetacean physiology. Now I'm working on biogeochemical modeling of carbon flow through different trophic levels in the Southern Ocean with a focus on baleen whales as climate engineers.

I was already a member of the AWI Postdoc team in the 2022/2023 cycle and would love to continue the work the team has started. We got very actively involved in the reform of the WissenschaftsZeitVertragsGesetz by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research by writing a petition, talking to the AWI Directorate, speaking at a panel discussion in Bremen, doing an HIFMB Podcast episode and a YouTube Live session at the AWIs4Future “Wissenschaft fürs Wohnzimmer”. We are also working on issues regarding the new time recording system and mobile working regulations as well as the establishment of a Helmholtz-wide Postdoc network and the 1st AWI Postdoc Days.

Coralie Broquard

Sylt/Helgoland

Hi, I'm Coralie, from France and I joined the AWI Wadden Sea Station on Sylt as a Postdoc in January 2022. My research focuses on the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the physiology of aquatic organisms. I first worked on the use and effects of antibiotics and hormones in farmed fish. My doctoral thesis focused on the genetic, molecular and environmental factors involved in the sex determination of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and their effects on its growth. During my first postdoc, I studied the effect of climate change (multi-stressor experiments in microcosms) on the early developmental stages of lugworm (Arenicola marina) in order to improve its dynamic energy balance model (DEB). I am currently working on the sources and routes of transmission of antibiotic-resistance genes in environments exposed to oyster farming.

I was already a member of the AWI Postdoc team in the 2022/2023 cycle and I’m continuing within this very dynamic team to move our projects forward. The main items on our agenda are the WissZeitVG reform, the regulations concerning mobile work and the recording of working time, the creation of a Postdoc network common to all Helmholtz’s centres and the organization of the 1st edition of AWI Postdoctoral Days. We interact regularly with PROCEED and sit on division council meetings as Postdocs’ representatives.

Elena Schall

Bremerhaven

I am a Postdoc in the Ocean Acoustics Group of the Physical Oceanography section (Climate Division). I also did my PhD, one short-term contract and my Bachelor thesis at the AWI, while I did my Master in the Netherlands and in Chile. This way, I know about all the benefits that the AWI brings us, but also the bureaucratic complications which often come with these benefits. I am part of the AWI Postdoc Team to support the development of good and future-oriented working conditions for everyone and to serve as a stakeholder for the political regulations that affect us as Postdocs, such as the WissZeitVG.

Lona van Delden

Postdam

Hi, I am Lona, originally from the Rheinland and now back in Germany with AWI’s Permafrost Section, Geo Division. I am primarily a soil scientist focusing on biogeochemistry and greenhouse gas fluxes. After my PhD studies on the effects of land use change due to urbanization on greenhouse gas emissions, I have done postdoc projects in Stuttgart, Kuopio (Finland) and now Potsdam. My current work is focusing on the contribution of the non-growing season to annual greenhouse gas budgets of northern pristine environments.

I was already a member of the AWI Postdoc team in the 2022/2023 cycle and am happily continuing with this awesome group of highly engaged fellow researchers. Additionally to the discussions and work of our broad activity spectrum, such as WissZeitVG reform, remote working at AWI and the 1st AWI Postdoc Days, I am supporting AWI postdocs individually on family matters and gender equality/code of conduct issues. Feel free to check out my work or get in contact with me for a chat.

Michael Angelopoulos

Potsdam

I am a postdoctoral scientist working for Prof. Dr. Julia Boike at AWI Potsdam. I specialize in subsea permafrost (yes, permafrost exists under water too) and I use geophysical tools and numerical models to say something about its state and distribution in the cryosphere. On a personal level, I am mostly interested in planetary analogues (i.e., Mars-like sites) and I hope to carry out such projects in the future. My AWI tenure includes a PhD, my current postdoc, and an exciting participation in the MOSAiC expedition during the polar night. With four years of experience in the Canadian energy and mining industry, my goal is to help expand career opportunities for postdocs. Now a permanent resident in Germany, I can also help internationals integrate in Potsdam and do the necessary paperwork to feel at ease. Further, I aim to help restore AWI Potsdam’s pre-Corona social atmosphere.
