Attention:

Please note: The system runs continuously at all cruises. Support is given by the board electricians. Please ask them if you need specific info, or contact the responisple AWI scientist.

Summary

The Model 8050 pCO2 Measuring System is an autonomous analytical system for online measurement of the mixing ratio (partial pressure) of carbon dioxide in oceanic surface water and in the marine atmosphere.

Components

The system consists of a wet box and a dry box. In the wet box, surface seawater is brought into equilibrium with air, which is measured for its CO2 content in the dry box. CO2 determination is peformed with a Li-cor Infra Red (IR) analyser.

Logged parameters

Parameter Sensor Output Type Unit
preliminary pCO2 pCO2 μatm
Type index unknown

Central geographical ship's position and time standard

Time synchronising is regulated by hand by comparing ship's time with computer's time.
Geographical ship's position via ship's system.

Rawdata storage on board

Data is stored on the computer of the GO system and in DShip system.

Dship

Preliminary, uncorrected measurement data. Reporting of a preliminary pCO2 (based on xco2, equtemp in licorpres) was implemented in May 2015, for reporting to DSHIP and on to AWI. Please note that these data are NOT the final product of this instrument. After-cruise processing of the data improves the values significantly compared to the preliminary value.

Data archiving on land

After the cruise the uncorrected DShip data set can be extracted from https://dship.awi.de/.
The data need processing for correcting the raw data to useful and high-quality pCO2 data. Final data are stored in SOCAT (https://www.socat.info), where further quality control is done. Also available in https://www.pangaea.de/ (for authorized users only).
