Smoking

Tobacco products can be obtained onboard.

Every participant is responsible for himself with respect to customs regulations. Upon entering the harbour only 1 carton of cigarettes per person is allowed in the chamber. Special regulations in ports can be found out from the crew.

To limit the dangers of passive smoking onboard following rules should be adhered:

Smoke free areas:

  • All laboratories

  • Meeting rooms, scientific work rooms, the red and the blue saloon, mess rooms, corridors and outward areas of the ship

  • Chambers which are accomodated by scientific members

Smoking areas (probably with restrictions):

  • evenings at the bar "Zillertal" in consens with the bar guests (query of the cruise leader at the beginning of the expedition)

  • in the crew chambers

  • in the corner of the winch room on the working deck and directly before the room under nice climatic conditions or in case of social events such as barbecue

  • smoking area astern of the working corridor in case scientific undertakings  (e.g. CTD operation) do not prohibit it

  • on the bridge if tolerated by the officer of the watch

In case additional scientific cruise members have to be on the bridge for professional reasons they will be given a smoke free are by the ship's command (e.g. close to the open door on the portside of the bridge).

  • The cruise leader may issue stricter regulations for the cruise members.

Advice and guidance:

  • Safety relevant areas will be marked as smoke free areas according to relevant regulations.

  • Smoking areas are marked such.

  • Deviating from the general rules mentioned above the ship's command can always prohibit smoking because of safety issues e.g. during fuel bunkering, handling of special freight items, mooring in areas with special safety instructions.

  • The ship's command makes sure that all people onboard become aware of the regulations shortly after embarkation and informs about eventual changes during the cruise.
