Components

All components are in the Aerologie lab (A-108). The system consits of 2 sensor boxes, a data acquisiton system, GPS antenna and a notebook (Linux, Xubuntu 16.04).
In each sensor box is a scintillator, which emits scintillation light when charged particles transmit. The light is transmitted to the photosensor (silicium-photomultiplier by Hamamatsu) via optical fiber. A HV module within the box converts the 5V input power supply to the supply voltage of 70V for the photomultiplier. The signal of the photomultiplier is transmitted to the data acquisition unit. The data acquisition unit needs a 15V power supply, provides the 5V power supply for the sensor boxes, amplifies and links the signals from both boxes, produces and transfers data files via USB cable to the notebook, and faciltiates an input port for signal transmission from the GPS antenna.
The data acquisition unit and the GPS box are connected via cable. The antenna is mounted at the railing above the starboard outside door.

Data logging, storage and archiving

Logged parameters

Central geographical ship's position and time standard

No online time needed for data acquisition. Time stamp needed to identify ship's position and weather data for offline processing.
No online position needed for data acquisition. Offline data processing is conducted with ship's position and weather data via time stamp.

Rawdata storage on board

Raw data is stored in ASCII files on SD memory card and USB stick connected to the notebook. A LAN cable connects the notbook to the data network of Polarstern. Data transfer to DESY per e-mail once a day.

Dship

No data transfer to DShip.

Data is archived at the DESY: http://cosmicatweb.desy.de/ctplot/
