Emerged from a small field station for Oyster Research founded in 1924 the Wadden Sea Station Sylt can look back on a long history and proud research tradition as part of the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland. Just like the AWI`s Helgoland site, on Sylt ecological time series are recorded, and the resultant data are made available to government offices, professional associations, and research institutes.

Guidelines for Coordination of Large Scale Research Infrastructures operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research

The use of the AWI's large-scale infrastructures in performance category II (LK II) is subject to the official guidelines of the Helmholtz Association. The guide explains the definition, rules, application procedure and controlling of the Helmholtz Association's LK II infrastructure as well as the AWI-internal organisation of the LK II infrastructures. It addresses the general principles for using the infrastructures FS Polarstern, FS Heincke, Neumayer Station III, polar aircraft and coastal stations and explains the processes and mechanisms for AWI-internal controlling. Specific handouts for the respective infrastructures for coordination, users and the User Advisory Board complete the guide.

It addresses the procedures for requesting time of use, the mechanisms for AWI-internal governance such as structure, budget allocation, decision-making processes, monitoring and performance indicators, as well as upstream processes for identifying and prioritising expeditions and investments. It also describes the cooperation and communication at the interfaces with science, logistics, the directorate and the user advisory board of the respective infrastructure.

Handout for users of the Marine Stations Helgoland and Sylt

The document explains in a transparent and comprehensible way the procedure for applying for use of the respective infrastructures, goes into the prerequisites, the process and the criteria for selection, as well as the guidelines to be followed and the obligations regarding publications, data and reports after the use of the infrastructure.

Handout for User Advisory Board
