• In order to get a permission to tour the ship as a visitor the tour has to be in the interest of AWI. The decision is made by the AWI dept. operations and research platforms or the AWI directorate.

    In AWI's interest are:

    • BMBF, DFG, GPF
    • German regional and national politics
    • Sciences (polar related)
    • Representative of financiers
    • Helmholtz community (polar related)
    • Cooperation partners of AWI (polar related)
    • Media representatives (polar related)
  • Infants and persons with limited mobility cannot visit the ship because of the risk of accidents e.g. caused by steep stairways or lose cables and hoses.

  • Animals are not allowed onboard.

  • Due to the extremely high demand for ship tours for the general public and the associated strain on the tightly scheduled shipyard operations, it is unfortunately not possible for us to fulfil these requests and we have to limit ship visits to the cases mentioned above. We appreciate your understanding.
  • Procedure:

    • Maximum number of visitors is 15.
    • Registration at least 2 weeks before the ship reaches port.
    • Max. 1 group of visitors per weekday.
    • Max 3 groups of visitors per week.
    • No visitors during the first and last 3 days of the time in the shipyard.
    • Same rules apply for visitors in harbours abroad.
    • The group must be led on board by an AWI employee who is well familiar with the vessel and the restrictions during shipyard times. This must be agreed on with AWI ship coordination.
