Insurance for expedition members

All participants of expeditions of the Alfred Wegener Instituts are automatically protected by an accident insurance and by a travel health insurance.

Generally there is no need for further action except for following persons:

  • Passengers that are older then 67 years or will be 67 years old during the expedition
  • Passengers that will travel more than 99 days including journey to and from the destination

These expeditions members have to register with AWI ship coordination before expedition start.

The detailled conditions of insurance and extension options can be found in the AWI intranet and will be presented in the Expedition Interface System (EIS) for every participant. Please get familiar with this so you know what you can expect from the insurances just in case.

External expedition members may contact the AWI staff that may give you the relevant information. You may also contact Martina Kniemeyer-Schulze from the  AWI - logistics department.

The ship's doctor has to be informed immediately in case of accident or disease onboard. The insurance company will then be notified. If something happens during journey to or from the destination promptly contact the AWI logistics.

The treatment of diseases caused by Covid 19 are also insured. If you cannot end your trip as planned and it is not your fault, your insurance cover will continue beyond the originally agreed end of the insurance. At the longest, until you can return home.
