The German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst DWD) runs a weather station in cooperation with the Alfred Wegener Institute on board RV Polarstern. A meteorologist and a weather technician participate in the cruises. They are responsible for radiosonde ascents performed on a daily basis and maintenance of the meteorological sensors. Weather forecasts are provided for the different users several times daily. The forecasts are relevant for the ship's command, chief scientist and helicopter operations.

Services:

  • general weather forecast
  • aviation weather service
  • marine weather predictions

Common parameters of forecasts are wave height, wind speed and wind direction, visibility, cloudiness, lower cloud base, temperature and humidity.
