Environment Protection Seminar (Antarctica only)
One-time participation of a Environment Protection Seminar is obligatory for everybody going south of 60° S with a German authorisation.
The legal basis is the Act implementing the Protocol of Environmental Protection to the Antarctic.
The seminar is held by AWI for the members of German institutions once a year. The target date is announced on the AWI webpage.
Participation is free of charge.
Members of foreign institutions have to visit an equal seminar in their own country and demonstrate the participation. The certificate of attendance has to be brought onboard. Inspections by members of other contracting states are possible.
Sometimes there are problems with participants who work with a permit of the German Environment Agency but do not speak German. The seminar is held in German so that also technicians and crew members may attend it. An additional seminar in English is too time consuming. Upon consultation with the German Environment Agency it was agreed that English-speaking persons will be given a training onboard RV Polarstern. These trainings are a bit informal but often more suiting to the tasks of the individual participants.
Persons going to sea with a foreign permit are not obliged to take part in the training onboard. They are however encouraged to attend it.
Every cruise member has to take the certificate of attendance to Antarctica. The chief scientist should control the certificate of every person onboard. Everybody who does not have a certificate has to take part in the onboard training. Only recently certificates have to be uploaded to EIS so that the chief scientist may check completeness already in advance.
The Environment Protection SeminarUmweltseminar has been held since 1997. It is visited by about 45-80 persons per year. Participants are also documented by AWI. Copies of the certificates may be handed out in case of losing the original one. Please contact the relevant person.
