Neumayer Station III (70°40' S; 08°16' W) is the central location of German polar research in Antarctica. The research infrastructure is available year-round to national and international scientists and technicians. The station has modern equipment for research and logistics and offers generous living and working conditions including lab and office space as well as workshops and vehicles for expeditions. It serves as a logistical base for scientific projects on the Ekström Ice Shelf, for large traverses across the inland ice and for supplying the Kohnen Station on the Antarctic plateau. Neumayer Station III maintains long-term scientific observations, which partly started in 1981, when Germany became a consultative member of the Antarctic Treaty System. During winter, nine people live and work at the station to maintain these scientific long-term observations. In the summer season from November till March, up to 60 scientists and technicians can be accommodated. Neumayer Station III is one of the hubs within the Dronning Maud Land Air Network (DROMLAN) and serves as a hub for scientific and logistical flight operations.
