This guide is based upon a risk assessment carried out for work on sea ice. Due to the fact that safety management is a living process, updates, improvements and changes of the system are constantly done. Safety management is never completed for which reason this guide will be subject to change as well.
Due to the fact that Polarstern is mainly operating in an environment that is very harsh and far away from any other vessel, station or settlement, strict health and safety regulations are crucial. Developing, maintaining, fulfilling and optimizing a safety concept that is reliable, efficient and easily understandable is of utmost importance for the safe execution of the project. Accidents can endanger the whole project. It is especially important to make sure that the safety concept is in accordance with the research plans and does not necessarily block or handicap the planned sampling operation. This safety guide is dedicated to ALL participants who will spend time on board of RV Polarstern. Rules and regulations defined in this guide are binding for all participants.
