Scientific data acquired on board RV Polarstern has to be archived with AWI operated information systems. They also have to be made available to the scientific community - eventually after a moratorium - via "Open access". This includes on board acquired data, scientific photographs and documentations as well as later acquired data from samples.

The metadata flow is based on the O2A framework:

Metadata of every instrument is registered in REGISTRY. Data acquisition is logged with DSHIP ActionLog. Data can be ingested into an onboard storage. Eventually all data shall be published in an appropriate data repository, e.g. PANGAEA.

Registry

All scientific devices used on an Polarstern expedition must be registered in the Registry!!!

Due to may be limited network connections during the expedition, this has mainly has to be done prior to the respective expedition.

Handles for the versions of the items in Registry can be published with the data in PANGAEA. This requires versions to be saved within Registry.

DShip

Every operation of a device must be registered in the DShip Action Log.

The devices in REGISTRY are synchronized with DSHIP. By registering a usage of a device in the DShip ActionLog a device operation ID is created. Log entries contain information on Date, Time, Longitude, Latitude amongst others.

Rules regarding data releases and scientific publications

Obligation to submit scientific data!

Data achieved during an expedition have to be published on the data portal PANGAEA or another publicly accessible online repository within two years after the end of the cruise at the latest. You have to pay attention to the fact that third party rights do not conflict with publication. Subsequently to being published in an online repository the data may be marked with a blocking notice for two more years. Thereafter the data has to be at the disposal of the scientific public for citation. In all publication, basing on one expedition, you must quote in the acknowledgements section the grant number (Grant No), which you can receive from the chief scientist. The grant number is derived from the expedition number: e.g. PS150: Grant No = AWI_PS150_xx, where xx refers to the number of your working group on the expedition. The correct number can also be found in the header of your working group's expedition report chapter. In addition, you must cite the article about the POLARSTERN research platform as follows:

The responsibility for enforcing these rules lies with the working group leaders and the expedition leader. The scientific coordination team will conduct a survey once a year to obtain an overview of the new publications resulting from each expedition.
