Reporting
Expedition programme:
For each expedition, an expedition programme is compiled by the expedition leader with the help of the PIs, which should cover the essential research aspects of the individual working groups. The programme must be submitted to the scientific coordination and to the editorial board (berichte.polarforschung@awi.de) at least 10 weeks before the start of the expedition.
For guidelines and instructions on creating the expedition programme using AWI-templates see http://awi.de/en/reports. Please note: Only template-based drafts will be accepted and edited. Please address any inquiries to berichte.polarforschung@awi.de.
Posts for the Polarstern App:
Regular updates in the Polarstern app have replaced the reporting requirement by weekly reports. At least three times per week the chief scientists are responsible for providing text and photos to the app. The contributions should report in a generally understandable way about the science conducted and life on board.
The individual contributions are summarised weekly and offered to interested readers as a PDF download.
Helmholtz Helmholz Blog:
If there are persons on the expedition who would like to report on the journey in a more extensive way in the form of a blog, this is possible via the Helmholz Portal. Interested persons please contact Folke Mertens from the AWI media department (media@awi.de) prior to the expedition.
Cruise Summary Report:
Cruise Summary Reports (CSR) are the usual means for reporting on cruises or field experiments at sea. Traditionally, it is the Chief Scientist's obligation to submit a CSR to the German Oceanographic Data Centre (BSH) not later than two weeks after the cruise. This provides a first level inventory of measurements and samples collected at sea. Currently, the Cruise Summary Reports directory covers cruises from 1873 till today from more than 2.000 research vessels: a total of nearly 53.000 cruises, in all European waters and global oceans. This also includes historic CSRs from European countries, that have been loaded from the ICES database from 1960 onwards.
At the end of the expedition, the cruise leader shall send the CSR to the BSH via its Internet-portal, if possible. Otherwise the CSR templates are located on the computer in the chief officer's office.
Expedition report:
A detailed expedition report must be submitted no later than 8 weeks after the end of the expedition by the chief scientist. Expedition reports are made available digitally as issues in the Berichte zur Polarforschung (BzPM). The report is prepared in close cooperation between the chief scientist and the leaders of the working groups on the expedition. The first versions of the individual contributions should already be collected by the chief scientist at the end of the expedition.
For guidelines and instructions on creating the expedition report using AWI-templates see http://awi.de/en/reports. Please note: Only template-based drafts will be accepted and edited. Please address any inquiries to berichte.polarforschung@awi.de.
Short report:
At the end of each expedition, the chief scientist will prepare a short report of the expedition in English and German (one page plus map), which is sent by email to the scientific scientific coordinator and the AWI logistics.
