There will be a designated recreational area available next to Polarstern on the floe where no research will be carried out. This space is dedicated to all who like to spend their free time on the ice. When going out on the ice for leisure time it is important to stick to the excursion rules which means that you need to report your absence from the ship, the time you plan to spend outside, the people you are going out with (no people allowed to be alone on the floe) and the polar bear watch in charge.
Inside the vessel there will be different opportunities to spend the freetime. Additional to the gym on board which includes swimming pool, sauna, solarium and workout devices, there will be table tennis equipment and a soccer table.
