The Kasten Corer is a technical modification of the standard gravity corer which allows researchers to sample and study sediment layers at the bottom of oceans. This system is a technical modification of the standard gravity corer assembled of square steel barrels (30 x 30 cm) up to 6 m long and a head weight of 3t. A square core catcher is attached to the lowest barrel. The kastenlot is up to 12m long and allows to recover large volumes of sediments in ocean regions where biogenic components occur in low amounts. To sample the kastenlot the square barrels must be dismantled, and a variable amount of square plastic boxes (up to 1 m long) must be pushed into the sediment. |
